Supplements for Breast Health
In late 1993, a study of treated 32 patients with advanced, high risk breast cancer was reported. In addition to appropriate surgery and conventional treatment, each patient was given 90 mg of CoQ10 per day. They also received other vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids.
In a 1993 study, 6 of the 32 patients with advanced breast cancer showed partial tumor regressions on CoQ10. One of these six patients increased her dosage from 90 to 390 mg per day. Within one month, her tumor was no longer palpable and in the following month, a mammogram confirmed the disappearance of her tumor. A second patient had similar results within just a few months. A clinical examination revealed no evidence of the prior residual tumor and regression of her distant metastases.(Ref: Lockwood K, Moesgaard S, Hanioka T, Folkers K. Apparent partial remission of breast cancer in ‘high risk’ patients supplemented with nutritional antioxidants, essential fatty acids and coenzyme Q10. Molec Aspects Med 1994;5(Suppl):S231–40.)
Another study found that patients with breast cancer are more likely to have low CoQ10 levels than cancer-free people. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun 234: 296-99, 1997]
Although the studies were small, it makes sense that CoQ10 is important for breast health. The nutrient is a strong antioxidant and important for cellular detoxification. If CoQ10 can make this much difference in persons with advanced disease, it can certainly play a roll in good health for those who are seeking prevention.
