Breasts are constructed primarily of fat tissue; connective tissue is present to hold everything in place. Each section of the breast is composed of a complex network of lobules, which produce mile and mammary ducts which act as canals to the nipples. Visualize this organ as stems with clumps of grapes clustered on each tip. There are five to ten ductal systems in each breast and each breast has up to about a million lobules.
Before puberty, immature breast tissue remains dormant. At the onset of puberty, breast growth is stimulated by estrogen and progesterone, causing the ducts to stretch and branch. Even though the breast is mature after puberty, it remains essentially inactive until pregnancy. During pregnancy, the lobules multiply and begin to produce milk for nursing. After menopause, when the ovaries stop producing hormones and a woman stops having menstrual cycles, the number of lobules decreases and shrink in size, in many ways returning to the pre-menses state.
EARLY DETECTION IS NOT PREVENTION
If cancer has been detected early, it means you already have cancer. Prevention means not getting cancer in the first place. Cancer starts with one abnormal cell. It takes nearly 8 years for that one cell to replicate to one billion cells. At that number, a lump can be detected that is one centimeter in size, the size that can be seen on a mammogram. This is a late finding.
Breast thermograms are non-invasive scans that detect heat changes, representing inflammation. While thermography does not diagnose cancer, it can detect areas of concern during that 8 year window and allow time for interventions that will reduce or eliminate inflammation, turning down the risk of cancer.
