NEW HOPE FOR FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome described as widespread musculoskeletal pain and pervasive fatigue. Most patients describe the pain as a deep ache, with muscles that feel like they have been over-stretched or overworked. Sometimes muscles seem to twitch and feel like they are burning. Fibromyalgia affects as many as 1 in 50 Americans. Most people with fibromyalgia are women and most people are diagnosed during middle age. However, men and children also can have the disorder.
Other symptoms associated with "fibro" including incapacitating fatigue, sleep disorders, jerking arms and legs during sleep, irritable bowel syndrome (alternating diarrhea and constipation), acid reflux, headaches, memory impairment and sensitivity to both smells and sounds. Aggravating factors can vary, but many complain that their symptoms increase when there are changes in the weather, during hormonal fluctuations (premenstrual and menopausal states), stress, depression, and over-exertion.
Conventional medicine offers only medications to try to reduce pain and improve sleep. In order to feel better, it is important to look for the cause if the problem, not just treat the symptoms.
